12 Week Year WAM Week 09

Weekly Score: 85.3% (29/34)

Goal 1 Declutter house and take care of family. 88% (22/25)

Review I did have to adjust the metrics, because the mice (yes, we have mice, and I hate it) somehow managed to unplug the dishwasher. And yes, they actually did loosen it so much that it fell out of the socket. So I didn't do dishes for two days. I'm so glad to have it back! I did a fair amount of laundry, too, although I still have a couple of loads to finish folding. I count it as a win.

Goal 2 Catch up on Fannish50. 78% (7/9)

Review Sitting down to write seemed impossible, so i didn't quite manage it as well as I would have liked. I did get some posted, but I'm almost caught up to where I've written, so I've got to get on that. Hopefully it'll work.

Goal 3 Prep for writing retreat. n/a

Review Had nothing due this week

Intentions for the future G1 - I'm going to focus on the living room. it's so cluttered and I want it cleaned up. I hate it, and I'm going to get rid of some things. Even if I have to take pictures and ask my kids if they want the things or if I can get rid of them. G2 - I've got so much writing to do, and so I'm going to keep up on this as much as I can. It's fun, if I let it be fun for myself. G3 - the retreat is in a week and a half. I have one last email to send out, details to get to the women coming with, and to organize last minute things. I'm actually really excited for this!

a tuesday back at it

In my defense, grief is a bitch, compounded with work and getting ready to go back to college. It's been a hell of a month, with so so much stuff going on all the time. It has reinforced that I would like to cut ties with my family, though, and reinforced that my friends care about me deeply. Yay on that front! Another yay is that I'm back at it with my creative writing classes. It's nice to be around other creative writers and stuff, though I'll admit it's sometimes a little discouraging hearing how my peers are working on novel(s) when I'm just puttering around writing poems, fanfic, and short stories. It's fine, though, because we all move at our own pace in life.

I've started on my autumn playlist, mostly just in preparation. It's been fun putting together and I think it's interesting how certain songs I associate with multiple seasons (i.e., thumbelina by Lizzy Hilliard). Though, I've been listening to Discount Cigarettes by Andrew Montana quite a lot recently - something about it just makes me think of autumn and when I was a little kid on the bus and coming home to my dad smoking on the porch. I love finding songs like that, though I fear my friends are getting to a point where they expect me to send weird little songs by small artists in the middle of the night.

On the note of my creative writing classes, I'm excited about the prospect of writing multiple short stories and poems (again, though I got all of my poetry credits done last semester), even if it's gonna be workshopped. I'm terrified of workshops, and I know at least two people in these classes personally. One doesn't know how dialogue works (I cannot make it through even a paragraph of his work), and the other is one of my closest friends. It's... going to be an interesting semester, either way, but I'm enjoying the readings and the writing exercises. Anyways, this has taken me an hour to write (two of my friends showed up and started telling me about stuff going on).

Have a wonderful day <3

=^-^=

I dreamed about kittens last night, and it was genuinely delightful. In the way of dreams, there wasn't much consistent context -- at first there was one kitten, and then three, and then maybe five? Some were orange kittens, and one was definitely some variety of tuxedo cat, and they were all SO CUTE. In an unusual twist for me, I wasn't even stressed out about the health and safety of the kittens! They were pretty clearly doing their own thing and totally fine. The point is, I got to snuggle a kitten in a dream last night and it was great.

The Little Mermaid 2023, did not have the same emotion as the original disney film. However, it was a delightful watch. it just didn't have the same charm. It was missing something. animus should have been better animated/drawn. They looked horrible. I could have forgiven the lack of charm and emotion if the characters had stayed similar to their cartoon counter parts. I thought Hallee Bailey was very charming in the role, she reminded me of Ariel to be honest. I didn't feel like Prince Eric was Prince Eric though. He was no where near as handsome, nor was the personality the same in any format or shape.

Now to watch Moonshot.

1. Which of your fics is your pride and joy?

https://archiveofourown.org/works/963730 Probably this one about Chaff and Haymitch the last night before the Quarter Quell.

2. What are your top three most commonly used tags on AO3?

Time Travel, Alternate Universe are my most used ones

3. What’s something you learned while researching a fic?

Who came second in the World Series in 2004 (not something I'd usually follow, but there's a specific Lost reference around who won, and it came up in a fic). Also some German Christmas traditions.

4. Is there a character or ship you’d love to write for, but haven’t yet?

For the benefit of those who haven't known me that long (if you've known me a while, you may well know) I will seriously try anyone once, in fact I do try to write as many characters as I can, especially the ones who don't get much attention (focusing on the same old characters has been my pet peeve for years). I'd like to do Claire from School Spirits, spend a bit more time with the Doppler family on Dark, Yellowjackets Lottie, Akilah and Mari.

5. What makes a fic ‘successful’ in your opinion?

When I'm happy with what I've ended up with.

6. What makes you happiest? New fic comments, kudos, bookmarks, user subscribers, story subscribers, or Tumblr asks?

Just generally getting good feedback. That was something that had made me particularly happy on an old Vampire Diaries fic for an exchange back in 2012 which I didn't think was any good due to family stuff going on at the time but I'd stubbornly refused to default.

7. Does anyone you know in real life know you write fanfiction?

No, and at this point I don't think I'm ready to change that. Let's just say I have this one relative who loves to get a reaction (things like spending half of Boxing Day Googling my ex from university, banging on about my cousin allegedly crying about the lack of crocodiles in Crocodile Dundee although the jury's still out on whether that really happened, spamming everyone he knows with right wing memes on Whatsapp, and he doesn't know when to shut up) - if he ever saw anything I'd written, he'd be reading it out to get a big laugh at the Christmas dinner table, probably 20 years on.

8. Did you do anything special to celebrate finishing a fic?

I never have so far.

9. What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

It's a rewrite of School Spirits Season 2, where Mr Martin chooses Emilio to possess instead and how that ends up impacting on Charley and Yuri.

10. Do you ever prep your fics with outlines or warmups before you start writing, or do you just dive right in?

I tend to dive right in. Sometimes I wonder if I should do an outline, but sometimes I find it gets away from anything I had in my head. Saying that, I have tried to work out something for the above School Spirits plot (don't want to get to the point of my Dark series where I was a few chapters in and then realised I hadn't factored in Noah).

11. How many times do you usually revise your fic/chapter before posting?

It can be a few minor edits.

12. A character you enjoy making suffer.

I can't say I "enjoy" making any suffer per se, but for me it's not always avoidable. If I actively dislike the character, I just don't write them.

13. A character you want to protect.

Dark's Mikkel Nielsen. Unfortunately, given the timeline, this isn't the easiest.

14. What is your favorite fic to get comments/messages on?

Pretty much any, although I still dread it a bit on the one that got thoroughly trolled in 2019 by what I now know was a known troll.

15. What fic took you the longest to write?

I keep saying I will finish this Lost fic, although I haven't touched it since 2010. Basically the idea was that instead of ending up in 2007 when the Ajira flight crashed, Sun ended up joining her friends in 1977 and was reunited with Jin in the DHARMA Initiative. I got as far as where Ben is shot, and then canon decided to kill off Sun and Jin. (Yes, Smokey McSmokeFace, you are still dead to me.) After having lost heart to continue it at the time, I keep saying I'll go back to it. After that it's probably Caught Somewhere In Time, which I'm about half way through the last chapter of after having started towards the end of 2023. Note to self: trying to change the already complicated timeline on Dark may not be the best idea in the world...

countdowns, rundowns, ruminations

The weekend was humid as fuck but I survived despite the humidity and the bus hell. Work was surprisingly Okay[tm] despite some individual wtfery (I say, with one shift left to go) ...

This weekend ...

- FFBE JP is shutting down in ~two months, just barely cresting its 10th anni. I am a few different flavours of something about this, mostly atm being annoyed that jp is getting an offline "Memorial Edition" that will allow revisiting the story and such when we got no such thing for gl last year -- and as long as this thing exists I bet Squenix will do nothing with the world and characters. (related: fuck Octopath Traveller.)

- Over three nights, probably ~2-3ish hrs a night, I wrote ~5k for a draft for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang. Never discount the power of spite, no u and Just Starting. (it is a Gundam thing and that's all I'm saying because my traitor brain will decide I'm finished otherwise.)

- Just when I thought I had run out of ability to pull my hair out by the roots because of Granblue, here we are. End of the week is sure going to be a Thing.

- I spent an inordinate amount of time chewing on Gatchaman related thoughts and things for a couple different reasons and now I've fallen into a (shallow) rabbit hole that's probably going to lead me into writing a post of some kind navel gazing about what Tatsunoko seems to consider Gatchaman canon/in-continuity/whatever. Man I just want to poke Ken and Joe with sticks, brain, why you gotta do this x_x

Books - August 2025

7 books this month, so 51 for the year, 1 ahead of my goal.

Maigret and the Hotel Majestic by Georges Simenon
This month's Shedunnit book club choice (also called The Cellars of the Majestic), so I was definitely going to read it.  Set mostly in Paris, although Maigret does go out of the city briefly.  The usual interesting plot and excellent mix of characters.

System Collapse by Martha Wells
The latest Murderbot, which brings me up to date with the series.  I enjoyed it, but for me, these later books don't quite have the feel the earlier ones had.  I won't be trying to watch the series, as I have my own version of Murderbot in my head.

A Vicarage Family: A Biography of Myself by Noel Streatfield
Fictional, but based on Noel Streatfield's early life (she was the author of Ballet Shoes).  Well worth reading, although the arrogance of Edwardian men of the upper and middle classes is astonishing.

Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
The current Goodreads challenge is the Summer Challenge, and this was one of the books under the Challenge Faves category, and, since it's on my mental 'should read sometime' I read it.  It was okay, but definitely not one of the genre I like, so I wasn't particularly struck.  I wonder whether it's more the concept than the actual story which is why it is so popular.

War Among The Ladies by Eleanor Scott
A British Library Women Writers book, set in the 1920s at a girls' school.  The insight into the lives of the teachers and their very real concerns, but also the petty nature of some of their behaviour is brilliantly observed and written.  I had a real feel for how perilous life was for many unmarried women at the time.

Music of the Night edited by Martin Edwards
Short stories by the Crime Writers' Association all with a connection to music in some way.  I was disappointed with many of the stories.

Stan the Killer by Georges Simenon
Three Maigret short stories.  I wouldn't normally buy a book like this new, but I had some Waterstone's points so I treated myself.  Three excellent stories, of the 'just one more page - oh, there's only another 10 left till the end of the story, I don't need to go to sleep yet!' variety.  I passed it onto J who said, "I'll take my time over it" and like me, isn't.

I have watched five episodes of Trigger now

After finding a stash of bullets at the scene of a suicide, followed by a mass shooting at a hostel, cop Lee Do suspects, given tight gun control laws, that something more is going on than just random violence. Someone is sending guns to people.

Let me describe Lee Do. He is very lovely and kind to people like the bereaved mother protesting outside the company where her son died on the job. He does not take a gun on patrol, for backstory reasons, and refuses the idea of promotion. But! He is super skilled in combat situations. He plays cat-and-mouse with shooters, in the role of the mouse. He can take out a dozen gangsters with knives. Also he rides a motorbike and wears a leather jacket off duty. He is played by Kim Nam-gil so he’s very handsome but in an approachable kind of way. ‘Look how cool our hero is!’ says the show, and I am willing to agree.

(I read a ridiculous film studies essay on the female warrior figure in HK girls with guns films the other day, which implied these characters were an unrealistic fantasy, as if the equivalent male character is any less a fantasy! I thought about this during Lee Do’s fight scenes.)

However, the main reason I decided to watch this was because Kim Young-kwang is in it. They therefore rudely did not have him show up till the very end of the second episode. His character Moon Baek is even more ridiculous.

You get his backstory in episode 5Which is that he was abandoned as a baby and raised for his organs – he has one eye taken before he is shipped off to America where he is rescued mid-organ-theft surgery – and who after killing the men who wanted to steal his organs (after a time skip) impressed an illegal firearms dealer who adopts him, and gets him a new eye, but one eye is blue, so actually he has different coloured eyes!! Amazing. What an awful lot of choices were made in that backstory.

But it is a fun show. I am judging myself a little for how much I am enjoying it. But even if it’s ridiculous, it’s a well made ridiculous, with a cast I can enjoy, and I feel I shall have no regrets.

I just finished the first Twilight Book, not bad, I know it's silly teen romance but honestly, it was awesome. I just started New Moon. I'm going to buy Eclipse and Breaking Dawn in the next month or so.

Today I'll be renting; Dune 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, and The Little Mermaid 2023. I haven't seen any of these. I'd love to rent Lilo and Stitch 2025, but I can't because it's not for rent on youtube or anywhere else. =( Booooooooo, make it for rent Disney. I'll buy it in a few days hopefully. The little girl who plays Lilo is such a good little actress, it made me want to watch really badly.

I just found out that Ryan Reynold's salary from Disney was cut off. What the fuck? Deadpool is a very successful franchise, it'll never survive without Ryan or being Rated R. I don't blame him for retaliating. Disney needs to get their shit together instead of blowing up bridges and setting their employees on fire.

I'm just excited because I'll be getting my money in a few days. I'm looking forward to not being poor. I also can't wait to support the LGBTQ community and help them a lot. I have some weird plans in the works so people can benefit off my cash.

Anyway, I still plan on making my book publishing company and working on a script for the INlighter Tales.
