When she was younger, Tsumugi would often dream of fairies, elves and mermaids, but she never thought she’d have the opportunity to actually meet one of them years later.

Tusmugi was standing on the deck at the back of her family’s summer home, watching the ocean. She followed the waves as they crept onto the sand and pushed themselves back. The sun reflected brightly off the water, and Tsumugi thought she caught a glimpse of something else. She squinted and leaned forward off the deck.

Sure enough, something orange glinted near the edge of the water, and in a second it was gone. Tsumugi looked around, and after she made sure no one was watching, jumped into the sand and headed for the ocean.

She walked until she was ankle deep in the water. Putting her hand over her eyes she peered farther into the distance hoping to catch another sight of what she’d been before. She stood there for at least five minutes, but instead of going back she walked forward until she was knee-deep in water. And five minutes after that, she was almost waist-deep.

The sun was starting to set and Tsumugi was getting tired. Then suddenly, she saw it. That brilliant flash of orange she’d seen before; and it was coming closer. She gasped as she felt something brush her leg. But it only made her want to know more.

Tsumugi took a deep breath before plunging under. She wasn’t a great swimmer, but enough where she could follow the path the mystery creature left for her. Not that she needed to go far, as she soon found herself face to face with a girl. But it wasn’t just a girl; Tsumugi noticed that she had a large orange tail. Could this really be a mermaid?

Tsumugi felt as the mermaid grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her up out of the water. After trying not to make it obvious she was gasping for air, she glanced over at the mermaid. She had orange hair, matching her tail, and a soft smile on her face. The mermaid reached out and touched Tsumugi’s face, brushing the damp hair out of her eyes. Tsumugi blushed and slowly raised her hand to touch the mermaid’s. Her skin was soft, and didn’t feel as if it had been in the water all this time.

The mermaid let go and dropped back in the water. Tsumugi watched her swim around before coming back up. She brought her hand up and grabbed Tsumugi’s arm, pulling her into the water with her. Tsumugi let herself fall back under. She wasn’t sure why, but she somehow felt safe underwater with her mysterious mermaid.

Besides having to occasionally come up for air, she let the mermaid take her around the ocean. She enjoyed seeing all the different fish, and especially loved seeing orange eyes staring back at her. Before long, she noticed the sun could no longer be seen in the water and unfortunately she had to get back. As if she already knew, the mermaid took Tsumugi’s hand one last time and led her back to the house.

Both girls surfaced. Tsumugi quickly caught sight of the deck before spinning around to face the mermaid. She barely had time to register anything before feeling cold lips press roughly against hers. She closed her eyes and wrapped her arms around her neck. She felt the mermaid only holding onto her briefly, before the kiss was broken and she saw orange hair pulling away.

The mermaid smiled as she leaned back in the water, floating around for a moment until she stopped again in front of Tsumugi. Tsumugi blushed again as the mermaid put one arm around her neck and leaned in close, lips brushing against her ear. She whispered one word, her name. Then she let go of Tsumugi, dove underwater and swam off. Tsumugi watched as she left, and didn’t turn away until there wasn’t a trace of her in the water.

Sara swam off, only pausing for a moment to look back. She’d excitedly entranced the young girl, left her wanting more. And I didn’t even have to sing, she thought with a smirk on her face.
