Title: triage
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Pairing/Characters: Edo Phoenix, Jim Crocodile Cook
Rating: Gen
Content Notes: none
Prompt: Fragile smile
Duel Academia is a mess. Jim’s doing better than most students - almost being turned into a Duel Zombie is better than actually being turned into one - and so he and Karen find a corner, watching the triage. Doctors and pro duelists alike, and some physicists and spiritualists, swarming students.
“Glad that’s not us,” Jim mutters. Karen snorts in agreement.
“I don’t blame you,” says a voice Jim half-recognizes, and suddenly Edo Phoenix is slumping against the wall, looking exhausted. He leans above Jim and offers a wave. “Mind if I join you?”
“Can’t hardly say no,” Jim answers mildly, but Edo must tell that he doesn’t mean it, because he slumps more, head knocking against the wall. “Here to study? See about the legendary Rainbow Dragon? Check on the competition?”
“Checking on friends.” Edo slants a look at him, and something in Jim’s face must betray his surprise, because his face quirks into a wry smile. “I know. But if you’ve met Judai…”
Jim nods. He understands. “Poor guy,” he mutters. “Goin’ half-mad about Johan.”
“Can you blame him? I don’t even know Johan and I feel guilty.”
Karen rumbles, and Jim tries not to flinch. Johan is gone, trapped in another dimension, and Jim can only think of him as he was at the end, vibrant and determined and wholly terrified. He wants to remember Johan as a friend, as being funny and friendly and kind, but instead Jim knows the memories will be tainted by apocalyptic fear.
“Hey,” Edo says, voice a little sharper. “Are you okay?”
Jim forces himself to smile. Edo’s gaze sharpens further, and Jim knows that his smile must look as flimsy as he feels. “Fine,” he says anyways, and clambers to his feet. Karen grunts her approval. “Gonna check on some friends.”
“Don’t be a stranger,” says Edo, as Jim turns away. “It’s not safe these days.”
