Title: pay it forward
Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
Pairing/Characters: Manjoume Jun, Johan Andersen
Rating: G
Content Notes: n/a
Prompt: with the title "Pay It Forward"
Jun waits about as long as he can stand, which turns out to be a good call, because his patience runs out moments before he bumps into Johan in the hall.
“Oh, Manjoume!” says Johan, which is maddening. “Long time, no see.”
The last little wire holding Jun’s patience intact snaps, and before he can think about it he grabs hold of Johan’s vest and drags him into the closest classroom. Johan doesn’t even look surprised, the bastard.
“You,” Jun says, “let me win.”
For a second Johan looks like he’s about to deny it, or play dumb, or something, but the moment passes, and Johan laughs. “I did.”
It feels like a bucket of ice water. “Did everyone there—”
“It’s been two years,” Johan says, far too kindly, and Jun hates that too. “North Academy wasn’t a good place. Why does it matter so much?”
“Because I thought I earned it,” Jun snaps. He’s older now, and ever so slightly wiser, he likes to think. But he still remembers the pressing anguish of being fifteen and needing to prove that he was worth something. He will always remember the glow of fighting his way to be the top student. And that means he will always remember Johan Anderson, one of the last duels he had to win.
“You did,” Johan says firmly. “I didn’t want to be a top student. You’re a good duelist. And you needed it more than I did.”
“That’s bullshit!”
“You seem like you’re doing better.”
Jun growls, low in his throat. “So, what, do I owe you a win now? Do you want to duel and win the way you were supposed to?”
Johan wrinkles his nose. “Of course not. You should… I don’t know, pay it forward. Let someone else who needs it beat you.” Jun must make a face, because Johan grins. “It doesn’t have to be today or anything.”
“Don’t-” Jun takes a deep breath, and it does nothing for him. “Don’t let me win again, if we duel again. Take me seriously and beat me.”
Johan has the nerve to laugh at that. “Sure, Manjoume,” he says. “I’ll take you seriously.”
