When Kaede woke, it was late morning, and the bed beside her was empty. She might have been disappointed – it wouldn’t really have been a surprise if Kokichi had done a runner – except that she could hear him moving around in the kitchen. She could smell too, the scent of hot oil, and it made her stomach grumble. They had expended a lot of energy since she last ate, it was true.
Kaede slipped out of bed, and she grabbed a robe before she emerged from the bedroom.
There was Kokichi in the kitchen as she’d thought. He was wearing only his underwear with her apron overtop. She stopped a moment to admire the picture he made; while the frills on the apron had seemed somewhat impractical when she’d been given it, she had to admit that the effect was rather pleasing. If you didn’t consider who it was who would be doing the washing.
‘Kaede, good morning!’ Kokichi turned to blast her with a smile. ‘Breakfast is nearly ready! You should sit down.’
‘I don’t think you’ve ever cooked for me before,’ Kaede said. Instead of going to sit, she tried to sneak in beside him – but Kokichi blocked her way.
‘It’s a surprise!’
‘Alright,’ Kaede said. ‘I’ll sit down.’ It was a shame though – while the table by the window had a nice enough view of the neighbourhood park, it did not allow her to get a good view of Kokichi. In her apron.
‘Are you ready?’ Kokichi called out to her. ‘Here it comes!’ He appeared before her carrying their plates; he deposited hers before her, before taking the seat across the table.
Kaede stared at the plate. ‘This is it?’
Kokichi had fried an egg – using one of her heart-shaped moulds, so it was cute – and he’d drawn another heart around it in tomato sauce, which was also cute. But when it came down to it, all Kaede could think was one egg.
‘Mm-hmm.’ Kokichi didn’t seem to notice the tenor of her voice – he had already split the yolk of his egg and was smearing everything together with the tomato sauce.
‘This is your idea of breakfast, is it?’ She didn’t want to sound ungrateful, but the single egg was making her feel slightly panicky. She imagined wasting away because Kokichi insisted on cooking for her. ‘It’s very … cute.’
Cute. Tiny.
‘You have lots of cute things in your kitchen,’ Kokichi said. But Kaede couldn’t even think of them.
One egg. One egg.
Kokichi had already finished his, and now he watched her as she gingerly picked up her fork. He watched as she sliced into the egg, and as she brought it to her mouth. She ate the whole thing in a handful of bites, struggling not to show her disappointment. She forced herself to say thank you.
Then, of course, he burst out laughing.
‘What?’ she said.
‘Kaede, you’re so easy to trick.’
‘I am?’
‘That’s not your real breakfast.’
‘Oh.’ Kaede was awash with relief; she didn’t even mind that Kokichi had decided to play that joke with her. ‘Thank goodness. I thought today wasn’t getting off to a good start at all.’
‘I think we already got off to a good start,’ Kokichi said, with a sly grin.
‘In bed doesn’t count.’
‘If you say so. We’ll do it in the lounge next time.’ Kokichi took both plates and headed back to the kitchen, and returned with the plates heaped with fried rice, each heap topped with another heart-shaped egg.
The eggs were a little lukewarm at this point, but that didn’t matter. It was the not-starving-to-death that counted.
