Valentine, still in his flightsuit, flopped onto one of the sofas in the study-hall hangar.
The only other person around was Jet, but Valentine knew that would change. It was still early, after all.
"Morning shift?" Jet questioned.
Valentine nodded. "Quiet one. Finished one book, read another, then played games for a bit."
Jet laughed. "Mick will want a book report, you know."
Holding up his datapad, Valentine grinned. "I'm ready. I even made some notes."
"That will just get you more homework."
Valentine was about to say that he was debating taking some distance classes and actually acquiring some real homework, but he was distracted by Jet's ears. Jet was wearing earrings.
They were only studs, but they were studs with sparkling orange stones. There was no way to miss them.
Valentine was quiet while he tried to remember if he'd ever seen Jet wear earrings before. He was fairly sure he had, but they'd been smaller and silver, or maybe gold. Nothing as obvious as sparkling orange.
Jet was busy tapping away at his datapad, however, and Valentine wasn't sure about asking. But he couldn't stop seeing them, whenever he glanced up from his own datapad and the quick messages he was sending.
"New earrings?" he finally asked, just before he heard the hangar doors open and the sounds of student voices.
"Old," Jet replied. "Really old."
He reached up to touch one ear and smiled. "I'd taken them along to reference the color and then misplaced them in a drawer, ah, about a decade ago? I found them while cleaning, earlier."
"Reference the color?" Valentine knew the answer before he'd finished asking.
Jet smiled at him. "Your Megaera's visor, of course."
