Psyche swore low and under her breath but she wasn't at all surprised that Varuna heard her anyway.
"You like it?" he asked from where he sat on the one clear patch of Psyche's cluttered sofa. More than once, during the last few hours, she'd wished she'd insisted on a proper office for her equipment. But after years upon years of working out of dark second bedrooms, even a main room big enough to have everything spread out had seemed like more than enough.
She had to see about proper tidying, though. She'd just dug so quickly into getting back up to speed that books and boxes and papers and cables had seemed incredibly extra and like they could wait.
"This is Loss-proof," she said slowly. "You built something Loss-proof."
"Theoretically," Varuna replied. "It works for NIN-ANA and downtime can happen but it's exceedingly minimal. Systems are taken offline before anything can cascade and repair begins instantly. It's not a new idea, but it's taken a lot of refinement over the years."
"You don't know if it'll work on a larger scale?"
"Would you, as a colony commander, be willing to take in and run completely new code when the current patches-upon-patches are doing just fine?"
Psyche laughed. She knew the answer far too well.
"You wrote half those patches."
"Shh." Varuna's smile was amusingly serene.
"Yeah, yeah. But I do understand it all. Wouldn't have thought of half of it, but I get it. It's fantastic. I can definitely keep it running..."
Varuna nodded. "Then we're done here for today," he said as he stretched and then stood.
"Junior System Administrator Psyche."
