Summary: A customer -- a young ranger sent by the King, no less -- requires special handling when the necessary parts for a custom job have been delayed.
----
Stretching, Athrun Zala glanced at the clock on the far wall before standing and wandering over to wind it. There was little point in checking it off the sundial that was baking in the afternoon sun coming throught the front window of the shop; despite being the first clock he'd built on his own, it was precise and kept perfect time.
With a sigh, Athrun made his way back to the workbench to clean up. He'd finished early, again, which gave him time to work on his own projects - elaborate wind-up toys, ornate mechanical clocks and sometimes a few other interesting items courtesty of parts and charms from the town's various mages and alchemists.
He was just an apprentice, despite his master having been gone on a journey for some time and his skill reaching a level that the townfolk considered on par with his master's. So he put in a full day each day, working hard at the many repairs and requests that came into the shop.
Extra parts went back into jars, bottles and bins. Scrap went into a can. And finished repair-work and sellable items went onto the shelves near the door for owners and customers to see.
Just like any day...
The floor was perfectly swept a few minutes later, leaving Athrun plenty of time to wander into the back of the shop to look through sketches and parts for something to work on. His only hinderance was a lack of materials - a rockslide had delayed the last order of specialized parts that he'd ordered from the main kingdom. They were, of course, supposed to arrive the next day and he knew he'd have no time to do more than sort and put them away when they arrived. Not unless he lacked customers completely.
Finally, he managed to narrow his choices down to two projects when he heard the bells on the shop door jingle. He wandered out slowly to greet his customer. This late in the afternoon meant it was probably a child with a broken toy or someone who'd finally been nagged into dragging over something for repair.
Athrun wasn't expecting to be almost immediately face to face with a downright beautiful young man wearing a Royal Guard uniform. He blinked a couple of times but didn't manage to say anything.
"I am so glad that you're here!" he exclaimed before pausing to breathe deeply. He'd obviously been rushing to get to the shop. Athrun wasn't sure if he should offer a chair or a drink first.
"Ah... um.... what can I do for you?" Athrun questioned. He didn't quite have a bad feeling about the situation - he just thought something wasn't right.
"This," the man replied, pulling a scroll from his sidebag. "As a direct order from His Highness."
Athrun took the scroll after a moment and unrolled it. He blinked a couple times before staring long and hard at the detailed blueprints. It would be difficult, but not completely beyond his skill.
"Um..." Some of the parts involved, however, were hard to acquire at best. Some were just ridiculously expensive. And some...
"You can do it, right?" the man questioned. Athrun turned his attention and was caught by the startlingly clear blue of the young man's eyes.
"Well, theoretically..."
"Theoretically? But you're the one who made..." The blond man trailed off and stared at Athrun for a long moment. "Who are you?"
"Athrun," Athrun replied. There was a bit of silence that was awkwardly long. "Apprentice Engineer. I mostly fix things."
"Oh." And another awkward pause. "Where is your master? These are his blueprints..."
With a shrug, Athrun admitted the truth. "No idea. I'm sure he'll get back eventually, though."
Face going through an array of emotions before finally settling on a wince, the man seemed to be thinking hard about the situation. "Oh."
"I can get started, though," Athrun said quicklt. "It might take a little while to get the parts, ah..." He risked another look at the man.
"Rey Za Burrel," he said, almost blushing a bit as he realized the omission he'd made in his excitement. He held out a hand.
"Make yourself at home," Athrun replied after shaking it nervously and nearly getting sucked into those blue eyes again. "I'm not even sure what I can do before tomorrow's deliveries arrive."
"That's fine," Rey said softly. "It'll probably do me good to rest."
Athrun nodded quickly. "I live on the second floor -- ah, Master probably wouldn't like me offering up his room, though, and it's been closed up anyway. You'll just have to share my bed."
No sooner had the words made their way out of his mouth than Athrun had realized what he'd said. "Um..."
Rey apparently either ignored the blush spreading across Athrun's cheeks or just didn't notice.
"I'd like that," Rey replied swiftly after a glance around the shop. He smiled at Athrun.
Athrun found himself echoing the expression.
After all, the springs wouldn't come til tomorrow.
