Prompt: September Four - Archie & David- head in the clouds
“A thing to understand,” Miss Carruth told the Honorable George Crabtree, “is that Mr. da Silva may be a poet, but he’s the more practical of the two.”
“Even though Sir Archie’s the veteran?” Bags took a long drag on his cigarette as he weighed this insight.
“Quite.” Miss Carruth tapped the dossier with a perfectly polished nail. “He’ll help you execute the needful, but Mr. da Silva’s the one who’s truly ruthless.”
Bags allowed himself a smile. “Takes one…?”
“You flatter me.”
“It’s not flattery if it’s the truth.” He exhaled and added, “I’m glad to know that Mr. da Silva can be relied on. Some of the smartest, most charismatic people…”
“Like your friend David?”
Bags nearly dropped his stub. “How do you know about him?”
“He was at a reading Mr. da Silva had me attend in his stead. Handsome fellow. Looked too dreamy to be true.” Her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “And, after chatting with him, I was sure of it.”
Bags bristled in spite of himself. “I’ve known him for years. He’s a good egg.”
“I’m sure he is.” Her smile sharpened. “We can’t protect all the dreamers, but that’s never stopped us before.”
