It's March! And before I can post the schedule for the year, I have a housekeeping question that I need to ask.

First, I need to say that this isn't a problem yet, but I'd like some thoughts about it before it becomes a problem. As a community, we have 1000 tags available to us. Right now, we're using just under 600, so as I said, not a problem yet. However, a participant writing every day for a full round adds as many as thirty new tags themselves. So a lively round could add a few hundred. (Lively rounds are awesome!)

My question is, most of those tags are pairing tags. If/when we get close to our tag cap, the most viable options are to either begin removing tags from older entries in the community or stop tagging pairings on new posts to the community. (Or, if you have a better idea, please share!)

Another, smaller change is that I edited the profile page to state that works can be posted to the community or AO3. I hadn't realized the profile required works be posted here and about half of the last round was just posted to AO3 anyway, so just... post. It's cool. The community pre-dates popular use of AO3 if not AO3 itself, and we have a collection there now, so post where you'd like. ^_^

(I'll probably entirely re-do the profile sooner than later, to be honest. I'd like to get a little history and a better general explanation of the community up. I can't promise this will be immediate, however.)

Thoughts on any of the above are welcome in the comments. ^_^

Making only single character/single fandom tags would reduce the number of tags automatically...and easier to maintain inside of round. So when folk like me come around with new fandoms and new characters that you haven't seen before, it's easier to add them to the tag list...

And I don't think you have to attack this all at once. Start with the next round and see where that takes you...

Yeah, I really like this idea and it'll be easier for me. Definitely going to try it for this current round.

(Also any converting of older tags will be nice and slow!)

That does seem like a sensible option to me! It's also probably not essential to have the creator names as tags, either, since it's possible to find all posts to a comm by one user by other means anyway.

I think creator tags can stay for now, just in case of seeing surprise works by a creator you didn't know ever participated. Just switching to character tags should lighten the load enough to not really need to worry about paring off anything else any time soon.

I like this idea and feel like it echoes a shower thought I had back in, like, December but then promptly forgot. I agree that tag conversion would be a huge thing but it wouldn't have to be done at once (as with the other tag conversion projects) especially since tags aren't actually a problem yet.

This does sound like a fairly ideal situation for going forward, however. I think we'll try it for the upcoming mini-round, see how it does, and likely properly adopt it after that.

Sorry for the question, but I just found out about the community and am adding it to whenisitdue - but I wanted to know when signups close. Is it when prompts are posted? Or essentially up until posting starts/ends? Thanks!

I generally prefer folks sign up before the prompts are posted but as long as they've not looked at the prompts (or politely forget them), after is fine too. Since we're low-pressure around here, I'd say just by the end of the round and try not to cheat too much! ^_^
