Clara was out of Toronto for the weekend, visiting her sister in London for the first time since Samuel had come into the world. The trip was too much for a baby, but despite her wishes Jack had convinced her to leave Samuel with him because he knew the perfect person to babysit the child while he was working.
Miss Brackenreid sounded surprised at the proposal when Jack asked her when she came by the butcher’s shop that week, but a kind smile followed her reaction with an “I’d be a pleasure to spend the day with the young one.”
He didn’t know for sure how much the woman knew about his situation with Clara and their arrangement, but he deeply appreciated that she was willing to lend a hand.
On Saturday morning, Margaret walked to the Walker’s home and met Watts on her way there. She didn’t ask any questions, firstly because her mother had raised her right and secondly because she wasn’t one to poke her nose into other people’s affairs —not even to check what she already thought was going on about the detective and the butcher.
Samuel was already awake when they got there, and he stayed focused on the bottle of milk that was his breakfast when Jack passed him over to her. He left with Watts, heading to the station Margaret supposed.
The day passed without complications, with Margaret recalling past times where that baby was her Bobby and Samuel taking her meals every few hours and napping between them.
At noon, Margaret took him for a walk to the park. It was a typical spring day with the sun shining behind the clouds and children feeding the ducks by the lake. Some ladies came over the bench Margaret saw down with a book to take a peek of Samuel, none recognising her as a Brackenreid or making questions about the baby boy she was not mother of.
Samuel was awake and curious about everything, the tall trees, the birds, the picnic baskets and the splash sound of tiny feet in the water. However, when they took the path back home little Samuel relaxed and fell asleep.
He didn’t wake up despite the noise his home’s door made when Margaret used the key Jack had handed her to unlock it. She changed her and then made sure Samuel had his teddy bear at hand in case he woke up while she made dinner.
It wasn’t that Jack had asked her too, but in case it got late she thought it was something to be appreciated. She got some vegetables and put together something warm for when Samuel’s father came back home. She noticed they had an oven as well, and she hoped Clara didn’t mind her using some flour and sugar to make a sponge cake.
The moment she closed the oven, Samuel woke up crying and Margaret hurried to pick him up. Cradling the baby in her arms, she whispered sweet words trying to calm him down.
“You had a bad dream, but it’s alright now, Samuel,” she said as she moved around the living room, hugging him close to her chest. “Sometimes we dream of things that terrify us and it takes us a while to realise we have woken up.”
Samuel stopped crying, but not until Margaret made use of the lullabies she remembered from when her children were that age. She didn’t leave his side anymore, not when taking her baking project out of the oven.
The baby’s eyes moved curious to the good-smelling dessert, but Margaret waited until Jack and his friend were back there to ask if Samuel was big enough to eat it.
The four of them shared dinner, and later Watts walked Margaret to her house.
