Both of these stories are actually from the same prompt, only with different characters from different fandoms, haha.

Making Conversation

When John first entered the castle, he expected to see his father there. It would be logical his dad had come to the place to examine the vast black cloud looming over it. Little did he know the cause was Rose, who'd only just arrived herself.

Meeting with Rose for the first time was a pleasant surprise. Very weird that she had turned gray and was talking in gobbledygook because of her going grimdark (he still didn't completely grasp what the word meant), but other than that, it was nice to finally talk to her in person. Eventually, John remembered he was looking for his father. He asked her to lead him to their parents, which she bleakly obliged.

When they entered one of the rooms, what greeted them were corpses, fresh blood trailing the stone floor. John was shocked. After asking Rose if Jack did this and making her aggravated, the teenage boy couldn’t help but chuckle when she had a purple pillow buried in her face. It surprised him actually she had a pillow like that.

“That is a really nice pillow, by the way,” he responded sweetly with a wide smile. The pillow does match her well, in a good way, John thought, not realizing what he had just said to himself. “It goes well with your weird dark skin and gothy ensemble.”

In an instant, a thin smile spread across Rose’s lips. She said something, which John assumed to be her saying “thank you”. He could accept that.

“You’re welcome!”

The teenagers continued going up to the castle, each step making John’s pulse jump.

More blood and dead bodies were scattered around, giving John an uneasy feeling swelling inside his stomach. The smell began to make him slightly ditzy, so it was a miracle he hadn’t fainted yet.

They were now getting close to the stairs that lead to the top of the castle, and John realized he and Rose hadn’t spoken with one another since they saw the dead soldiers back at the hidden hall. He thought once they met together in real life they would have no trouble talking, but apparently that wasn’t the case. Then again, Rose was grimdark and not able to speak clearly for the time being. Still, the silence between them drove him nuts. He cleared his throat before speaking.

“By the way, did you know that Karkat thinks we are supposed to get married?”

Rose halted, but didn’t turn to face John as the young man anticipated. His shoulders became stiff and his heart drummed in slow but hard beats.

Fuck, John, why you have to mention it?

It seemed silly to be mentioning the talk he and Dave had with Karkat not long ago. It was too late now to take back what he had said. Not noticing the keen interest in Rose’s eyes, John tried to hide his anxiety by flashing a wide smile at her.

“Wait! I hope that didn’t come off as a proposal or anything!” He laughed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck. “Sorry, I’m just making conversation. I guess I am a little nervous.” Another laugh. “Because technically, this is the first time we have ever met, and also, you are talking like an eldritch monster, so I’m kind of babbling. We don’t actually have to get married, though.” He was about to stop the conversation there, but he didn’t want Rose to get the wrong idea. “I mean, not if you don’t want to.”

This time Rose had a blank expression. A quiet chuckle escaped from him.

“Okay, I’ll shut up now.”

The pair got back to going to their destination, the quietness following them. John sighed to himself, feeling tired from both the walking and not making a fool of himself towards Rose.

As John was walking, he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like if they were married. He admitted, he loved the chats they had together online and even enjoyed her company now, just her being by his side. The both of them could get along easily despite their different interests and ambitions.

Could she be the person I want to go grow old with?

John had been playing around with that idea once in a while, but knew he was too young to be thinking that. Besides, he hadn’t been romantic with anyone yet, let alone fallen in love, so it was odd to jump to that conclusion with Rose.

Heck, I’m not sure if we’ll survive after this game is over.

Still, it wouldn’t hurt to hope, right? All John prayed was that his friends and he win this game and make it back to their world safe and sound.

When the teenagers finally made it to the stairs, they quickly rushed to the top. Excitement coursed through John’s veins, but soon they would turn cold.

Title: Man Talk
Author/Artist: Bay Alexison
Fandom:Fullmetal Alchemist
Pairing/characters: Roy, Ed
Rating: PG
Warnings: Vague mentions of domestic abuse
Prompt/challenge you're answering: Edward is looking for someone to grow old with. Could that person be Roy?
Summary: When Roy's nap gets disrupted, he didn't expect Ed to come crying to him.
Author's Note: Haha, this was originally going to be for livejournal's [livejournal.com profile] fma_fic_contest  "Turn a Cliche on its Head" prompt back in November, only for me to being sick and unable to get it done. The community then went ahead and use the prompt again last month. I finished it, but didn't like it and instead did a different story for the prompt. When Suzume revealed the prompts for this community, though, I decided to polish it up a bit and post it here. Unbetaed, so you guys can point out any awkward sentences if you want.

Man Talk

It was a bright and sunny morning at Central. The streets and sidewalks were crowded already, the people up and early to get to their destination. At the military headquarters, everyone working there was already starting on their assignments. Well, except for one.

Roy Mustang, newly promoted Brigadier General, already took a nap, laying his head on the desk and having his hands as a pillow. Today was Riza’s day off, so she wasn’t here to wake him up. His sleep was good and he was getting to the best part of his dream until—

THUD!

He immediately woke up, muttering something over hating being disturbed while taking a nap and that person owed him a new door. Roy’s mouth was wide open though when he saw someone he didn’t expect to see coming to the military headquarters anymore.

“Ed? What the hell are you doing here?”

To Roy’s surprise, Ed looked like he woke up from a really bad hangover. The former alchemist’s stance was unbalanced, dark bangs encircled around his eyes, and the brigadier general swore he could smell alcohol from his breath.

“Mustang, I need you!” Ed slurred. He then kneeled on the desk and hugged Roy tightly.

That caused the Flame Alchemist to worry. Ed was never the person to be so helpless like this. There seriously must be a good explanation for this. Feeling really uncomfortable with Ed close to him and his breath making him slightly dizzy, Roy pushed Ed off the desk. After being sprawled on the ground for sometime, the younger man got up slowly and pouted.

“Okay, tell me what’s going on,” the brigadier general said as polite as possible. Roy was losing his temper already, but he tried to stay calm so that he wouldn’t scare him away. He didn’t want drunken Ed to run around Central and make chaos, despite no alchemy.

Ed sniffled and grabbed a chair to sit on before telling his story. “Well, lately Winry has been really abusive to me. Each time I did or say something wrong, she would hit her with her damn wrench. I couldn’t take it anymore, so I left home and was…”

Roy had one of his eyebrows raised. “And what?”

“Well, I was soul searching, you can say. I thought I love Winry, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. I then realized there is someone I know that truly cares for me and wouldn’t want to see me get hurt.”

Before Roy could ask who Ed was talking about, the young man got up and leaned over the desk to get closer to the brigadier general and give him a kiss…on the lips. This time, Roy kicked Ed away from him and he was on the floor again. The former alchemist groaned and got back on his seat with a bemused expression on his face.

“You seriously can’t think I’m the one you want to be with!”

“But you don’t want to see anyone get hurt, right?”

“Of course I don’t!” Roy paused, sighing. “However, I’m not exactly the kind of person to be suddenly emotional when someone is depressed,” he continued on in a more calm tone. “Ed, I care about you, but not in that kind of way. You get it?”

The young man lowered his head, but didn’t say anything yet. The Flame Alchemist hoped Ed would open his eyes and realize this was ridiculous. After what seemed like forever, Ed nodded and said “yes” in a defeated tone.

“Good.” Roy smiled, glad they were getting somewhere now. “Honestly, this is not you at all, asking for someone’s comfort in this kind of fashion. If you want, I can send you to a hotel room to stay at until you get your act together.”

“That’s okay, I’m good. However, I’m wondering where I go from here now.”

Roy cringed, his face filled with confusion. He was never the one to counsel someone in situations like this. A chuckle then escaped from his lips, thinking this was an easy one, actually.

“Well, the first thing is you need to go talk to Winry. You know, about how you don’t like it when she hits you with her wrench.” He was about to say more, but he snickered. “Then again, you’re no Romeo, so she most likely hits you for good reason.”

“Mustang!” Ed screamed, eyes showing annoyance.

“Okay sorry, just joking. Seriously though, you need to talk to Winry about this instead of running away to find comfort from someone else. I know you’re not the kind of person that likes to discuss things over, but give it a try. She might reconsider not being violent anymore.”

“And if that doesn’t work?”

“Marriage counseling, although I’m not a big fan of those,” Roy admitted, shrugging. “The fees are outrageous and you would have to keep going to the sessions.”

“Yeah, counseling is damn expensive,” Ed agreed in an expressionless tone. “If that’s the case though, it wouldn’t hurt, I guess.”

“I may not be the best person to go for advice, but trust me when I say that you still have feelings for Winry and you two just need to talk things over.”

A smile finally lifted Ed’s face. “You know, Mustang, you’re right. I’ll give this talk thing a try.”

The young man got up and shook Roy’s hands before leaving him alone. The general sighed in relief and reclined on his chair. Perhaps he wasn’t so bad at giving advice after all; he wouldn’t mind doing that more often. Roy was about to go back to sleep and try to get back to that dream, but someone screamed his name, causing him to stir.

“Mustang! I want you to love me and make me feel good about myself!”

Roy couldn’t help but slapped his head, seeing Al in the same state as when Ed entered his room.
