Summary: A stranger senses something terrible about the Millennium Puzzle.
The man from another world recoiled, swinging his hands up in a defensive stance as light sprung out from something small clasped between them. In the small space, it was nearly blinding, and Yuugi ducked his head, shielding his eyes with one hand as the other curled protectively around the Puzzle. It was more than the sight of it; the sound of it thrummed with a power that made Yuugi’s skin prickle.
He felt his other self press out towards him, asking to take over in the face of danger.
But Yuugi had seen the way the man had looked at the Puzzle.
No, let me be the one to protect you, this time, he said silently to his other self, hoping he sounded more confident than he felt.
Partner! his other self protested, his insistence nearly overwhelming. But ultimately, he couldn’t force the issue; even before Yuugi was fully aware of his other self, the decision to cede control had always been his own.
To both of their relief, after a long, tense moment, the man calmed, and the light withdrew back into what Yuugi saw past the spots swimming in his vision to be a small cylinder. With some hesitance, the man tucked it back into his belt.
“I… apologize. I should not have been so hasty,” he said. “It’s just, that artifact you carry… the Dark Side lies heavily upon it. I can sense a great evil in its past.” He closed his eyes briefly with a grimace. “I can hear the screams of terror and suffering, echoing from that dark past. I dread to think what a true psychometric would see if one could lay a finger on that pendant of yours. I know I am but a stranger to you, but I would strongly advise you rid yourself of it, if you can.”
Yuugi took a half step backwards. He almost would’ve preferred the man still be threatening him with that blade of light.
He felt his other self’s stunned disbelief give way to disquiet. He was thinking of Pegasus’s words of warning, Yuugi was sure. Thinking of his own empty memory.
But that didn’t matter.
“You can say that, but…” Yuugi said, curling his hands tighter around the Puzzle. “the Puzzle has brought me many precious friends. Even if there’s something terrible in its past, I can’t just throw it away.”
Not without harming the spirit trapped within. And Yuugi could never accept that.
“I thought as much,” the man said sadly. “I can only trust in the Force that I’m doing the right thing by letting it be. But be wary; the evil may be in its past, but the wounds of the dark remain.”
