Prompt: Day Three - Faith Lehane & Cay Rivvers - that could have gone better
Author's Note & Summary: Desert Hearts is a classic of lesbian cinema that takes place in 1959. Cay was 25 at the time. When the scythe activated all of the Potentials, that's when Cay was called. Faith has been tasked to train her.
“That could have gone better,” said Cay as she watched the vampire explode as Faith staked it.
“Nah, Grams, you're doing great,” said Faith. “Nobody expects you to dust one on your first time out. It's normal to want to skedaddle on out of there the first time you see a fangy beast.”
Cay thought of Frances and chuckled, “It's been a while since anybody considered me normal.”
“Oh, you're not normal. None of us are. Well, Xander, maybe, and Dawn when you forget that how she came into being. You'll meet them at some point. But we've been chosen for this thing.”
“To save the world. I fought against it so hard and now you want me to fight for it.”
“I know. I didn't get it for a long time either. Some days I still don't. I'd like to go back to an easy life, but I got this gift, and it beats the hell out of fading into the background.”
“I will say that I am enjoying the Slayer healing properties,” Cay said. “It makes getting up in the morning so much easier and my arthritis doesn't bother me so much. I might start sculpting again.”
“Sounds like a plan. There's a lot of downtime 'cause, you know, vampires. Though some of the other big bads come out during the day. But if you're not researching, then there's not a lot else besides training.”
“I've never been good at the research. I know someone who would be great though.”
“Who's that?”
“My wife, Vivian.”
“Was that the old gal that came to the door when I came looking for you? I thought you said she was your roommate.”
“Habit when dealing with strangers. We've been together off and on for about forty-five years.”
“Wow. I'm lucky if I have a relationship for forty-five minutes.”
Cay laughed. “You remind me of me when I was your age. It'll happen.”
“Well, for now, I'm just trying to keep on breathing. I wouldn't mind having someone around for the hungry and horny times though.”
“Should I ask?”
“Effects of slaying.”
“Oh, Viv is gonna love this,” Cay said with a laugh. This slaying business might not be too bad after all.
Once she got used to the vampires, that is.
