Prompt: In the Air Tonight
“I want to go to space again,” Asta said at a bar in New Orleans one evening.
The dark-haired woman who slid onto the stool next to her cracked a smile.
“Let me guess. You were on one of those little ships that goes up into the air really high and then comes down a few minutes later,” the woman said.
“No, I was on the moon. I'm not really sure how I got there, but I did recognize it going away from it. It looked different than I expected.”
“How so?”
“Bigger.”
“I've had that experience every planet I've been on.”
“Are you an alien?”
“No, I'm a human.”
“Sorry. I shouldn't have asked that. I just know an alien. Actually a couple of aliens and a lot of them looked pretty human. I'm Asta, by the way.”
“Zoe.”
“How many planets have you been on?”
“So many I lost count. Never been to Earth-that-Was though.”
“Oh. That's... Earth-that-Was? But we're still here.”
“For now.”
“Was it the Grays?” Asta whispered.
“No, I don't think so. I don't know what it was. Never paid that much attention in school for the rhyme and reason of it all.”
“Too bad,” said Asta.
“It's not for a long time,” said Zoe. “Want to check out my shuttle?”
“If it's the same thing as checking out your etchings, sure, I'm up for it.”
Zoe chuckled. “You'll see.”
Ten minutes later, they rounded a corner near the bar, and there parked as if it had always belonged there was Zoe's shuttle.
“Holy crap,” said Asta. “You weren't lying.”
“Why would I lie?”
Asta shot her a look and mumbled something about etchings.
“I don't draw,” said Zoe. “Feel like coming with me?”
Excitement thrummed through Asta's body. “Absolutely.”
She followed Zoe into the shuttle and they set off for worlds unknown.
