The longer Masaharu knew Yukinari, the less the latter made sense. Masaharu watched, with some apprehension, as Yukinari endeared himself to Shuuki and Natsume. His quirks, strengths, weaknesses… All were laid bare before Masaharu's brothers, and yet Yukinari revealed almost nothing to Masaharu himself. They weren't even on first-name basis. It stung a little bit every time Masaharu heard "Shuuki-kun" or "Natsume-san" or "Amamiya-san"--the last, most informal title was reserved for him. Phrases like "Amamiya, when is the homework due?" or "Let's walk back together, Amamiya." were the bane of Masaharu's existence.

It took a little while for Masaharu to realize that the feelings he'd interpreted as regard, concern, and affection in Yukinari were really nothing but. Yukinari toyed with Shuuki's feelings and enjoyed pushing Natsume's buttons--nothing more. Masaharu wasn't sure if this was a good realization to make or not.

Yukinari and Masaharu would eat lunch on the school roof silently, sharing nothing but revealing much. On those occasions, Masaharu would observe Yukinari quietly. His classmate's back seemed so small, so weak. It was hard to believe that the pride of the Hosokawa family rested there. One afternoon, Masaharu was caught staring.

"Amamiya-san?" When an embarrassed Masaharu didn't respond, Yukinari continued, "… Isn't it lonely, being treated the same as other people?"

All people who are patient and long-suffering have a certain threshold for how much they can take. Living with brothers like Shuuki and Natsume made Masaharu's threshold for frustration much higher, but there was still only so much he could deal with. Something in Masaharu snapped. He was tired, so tired, of being called "Amamiya". Written with the characters for "heaven" and "palace", Masaharu could hardly think of anything more inappropriate to refer to himself with.

He pushed Yukinari up against the chain link fence that enclosed the roof area. It was so thin, made of such malleable metal that it seemed to Masaharu that at any moment, they might slip past it and into a freefall. He felt the wind whip around them, reminding him of the location, and he bit his lip, his built-up frustrations having nowhere to go. In a way, he was trapped more than Yukinari despite his intentions. "Please promise me…"

"Hmm?"

"Don't call me 'Amamiya' anymore…"

"Heh. Why not?"

"Because you're right… Being treated the same is lonely."

"… I was waiting for you to ask, stupid." Yukinari pushed just a little and within moments, the two toppled over backwards. Masaharu hit his head on the concrete roof floor as Yukinari fell on top of him, but it was such a low impact that the pain was short-lived and dull. "It's nice to hear you be honest once in a while… Amamiya."

Masaharu knew then that this torment was likely to continue for as long as Yukinari found it amusing. … Whether this was a good or bad thing would remain to be seen.
